Annapurna Expedition

Annapurna is a Sanskrit word translated into 'The Goddess rich in Sustainance' or simply 'The Provider'. It was first climbed by Mt Herjog and L. Lachenal in 1950. The Annapurna Himal and the Lamjung Himal stretch from Kali Gandaki in the west to the Marsyandi in the east. Four summits make up Annapurna with the entire massif forming a barrier on the northern side of the Pokhara valley in Nepal. The main summit stands to the west of the Annapurna sanctuary. It requires 2 hours from the base camp ro reach the bottom of the mountain. It requires aapproximately 65-70 degrees of steep climbing with fix ropes of approximately 500 to reach camp 1 to camp 2 approximately 1000m fixed rope will be required along the ridge and some stretches of steep climbing . From camp 2 to camp 3 is relatively easy with zigzag crossing and gradually climbing up. However, it will require approximately 1300-1500m fixed rope will be required from camp 3 to the summit. Generally fixed rope is not required and the main rope is used. There are possibilites of avalanches between camp 1 and camp 2.

When Dr.A Heim from the windows of Dakora aircraft viewed Dhaulagiri and Annapurna only few were known about mountain. The aircraft could not fly high enough for proper observation or for photographs, still the next year, June 3 1950, Annapurna was conquered. It was the first eight thousand to be climbed .The French accomplished this feat. However all the routes on the mountains pose serene difficulties and hence it is probably why fewer climbers have reached the summit of comparision to other 8091 m peaks.
